How to depose a film
GENERAL CONDITIONS OF DISTRIBUTION
-
A distribution agreement is concluded with every filmmaker/artist/right holder who deposits a film at LIGHT CONE. It is concluded for 5 years and renewed by tacit agreement every 5 years but for the explicit opposition of one of the parties. LIGHT CONE as an organization devoted to distribution and promotion of experimental cinema agrees to distribute in a non exclusive way the films deposited. This distribution is not submitted to any geographic limitation unless a contrary indication. Fifty percent (50 %) of the rental price will be paid to THE OWNER, the remaining fifty percent (50 %) being destined to finance LIGHT CONE's running costs. The rental fees are credited annually on the right holder bank account. The right holder must send back to LIGHT CONE a receipt. LIGHT CONE supplies annually to the right holder a list including the places where his or her films have been shown during the year and, if possible, program notes of the screenings. However a brief information can be supplied to the right holder at every moment. Prints deposited at LIGHT CONE remain the property of the right holder. The right holder can remove the prints whenever he wants unless previous rental commitments. Temporary print outgoings for personal reasons are allowed but should remain extraordinary, subject only to prior commitments and against a 10 ยค charge. For every film deposited, an individual distribution form including all the appropriate technical information must be filled by the right holder. For the works to be screened in particular conditions of projection (expanded cinema, separated soundtrack, etc.), the right holder must supply to LIGHT CONE the most precise indications. The distribution forms are available on simple request. We incite the right holders to supply to LIGHT CONE a short critical and descriptive text, some stills and a preview VHS or DVD for every new film deposited at LIGHT CONE. This VHS or DVD won't be lent or rent. To deposit a film with LIGHT CONE is to agree to the above conditions.
PRESERVATION - PRINTS MAINTENANCE
- Filmmakers must provide a suitable print, if possible new, with its reel and can when depositing a new film for distribution. Prints must be clear of splices. The right holder will inform LIGHT CONE of the location of the originals of films in distribution in order to facilitate the reprinting of new print :
- when a print of a film in distribution is irreparably damaged by an exhibitor, payment of the new print is the exhibitor's responsibility.
- when a print can no longer be distributed because of normal wear and/or deterioration during projection or travel, the payment of a new print is the right holder's responsibility.
- LIGHT CONE undertakes to store the films in the best possible conditions. In order to guarantee the maximum life of a print as well as optimum projection quality, LIGHT CONE will automatically carry out any procedure necessary for its preservation (lacquering, de-scratching, etc.) and will automatically deduct the cost incurred from the right holder's rental account.
NEW DEPOSITS
- LIGHT CONE distributes Super 8, 16 mm and 35 mm experimental films and experimental video works (all formats except VHS and DVD).
- For the artists who have already deposited a film at LIGHT CONE, new deposits can be made automatically by sending the print and the distribution form.
- For the artists who have never deposited a film at LIGHT CONE, the works must be submitted to LIGHT CONE's Preview committee composed by filmmakers and LIGHT CONE's crew. The candidates should send to LIGHT CONE a VHS or a DVD of their work with name and address. The committee meets once every two or three months. The artistic quest and formal experimentation such as the coherence of the work with the rest of the collection are the main guidelines prevailing to the committee's choices.
CALL TO FILMMAKERS
- Filmmakers you are not eternal. Please make a list of where your originals and prints are (labs, co-ops, museums...) so that the work of preservation and circulation of your work can continue through your inheritants. Your works also need documentation in order to be broadcast and studied. Supply to LIGHT CONE all the documents you can on yourself and your works : stills, texts, bio-filmographies, VHS or DVD for preview, etc. These documents will be classified in your personal files and made available for the programmer's and investigator's consultation. You have books or documents in duplicate that could be interesting for LIGHT CONE's documentation.Your gifts are welcome!
