Nineteen Obscure Frames That Changed The World.

Directed in 1927 by Germaine Dulac and scripted by Antonin Artaud, The Seashell and the Clergyman is generally considered to be the first Surrealist film: a key element of French cultural heritage. This box set is all the more welcome for the fact that the film has been hitherto unavailable to the French public on DVD. A number of additional bonus tracks throw light upon various different aspects of the film (aesthetic, technical, economic).

The box set includes:
• The film in its original silent version, restored by the Nederlands Filmmuseum in collaboration with Light Cone.
• Three musical versions composed by Pascal Comelade, Thomas Köner and Iris ter Schiphorst.
• Two extras conceived by Nicolas Droin and Prosper Hillairet, with contributions from Artaud and Dulac experts: Tumulte aux Ursulines (Uproar in the Ursulines, 2008, 15 mins) and Surimpressions (Superimpositions, 2009, 33 mins).
• A new and revised edition (160 pages) of the seminal book by Alain and Odette Virmaux published by Paris Experimental (1999).
• Germaine Dulac's biography and filmography.
• An account of the restoration of the film: Catherine Cormon, director of restoration at the Nederlands Filmmuseum, retraces the history of the different versions of the film and of the restoration process.

This bilingual (French-English) box set with a DVD and a book is an indispensable resource not only for researchers and students but also for enthusiasts who want to learn more about the film. It offers the possibility to rediscover Germaine Dulac's famous film in its restored version while it facilitates comprehension of this avant-garde masterpiece thanks to the perspectives opened up by the various artistic and theoretic contributions of the participants.

The box set is available for online purchase via Light Cone's shop.

Carte blanche à FILMSTAD

"Filmstad producties S.A. started on June 27 1995. Its main goal is to produce experimental or personal films which have the "WAUW" factor. In my opinion a producer is someone with good ears and its main task is to listen to the director, take care that all options for a good start of a film are in place and make a film that is as good as it can be in the given circumstances. And act as a mirror. #11, mareymoiré by Joost and Hong Kong (HKG) by myself were the first films which came out of Filmstad and premiered in 1999. Bart Vegter, Hester Scheurwater and Marc Schmidt fitted perfectly in the Filmstad philosophy and there were more films. But soon I found out that making films is one, but running a business is two. I changed the philosophy to "Low Profile - High Quality" and started filming the "Careless Reef series". In a period of four years I made about 200 dives and shot 80 hours of video. Great time! Joost worked seven years on #37 and Bart Vegter made with "De Tijd" (one of his most beautiful films) with another producer.
Filmstad is still alive but after finishing #37 the only work in progress is a proposal for a feature called "Hey Joe". But there will always be new films or projects. Wauw."

Nature as Performer in the Films and Installations of Chris Welsby

Chris Welsby has been making and exhibiting work since 1969. His films and film/video installations have been exhibited internationally, at major galleries and museums. In April 2009, he will be presenting at SCRATCH some 16mm films from the 70’s and some recent works.

"In my single screen films and single channel videos the mechanics of film and video interact with the landscape in such a way that elemental processes - such as changes in light, the rise and fall of the tide or changes in wind direction - are given the space and time to participate in the process of representation. The resulting sequences of images make it possible to envisage a relationship between technology and nature based on principles other than exploitation and domination.”

PETER BEYER and Sector 16

New website

A new version of Light Cone's web site has been on line since the 4th of July 2008. Its content has been re-organized and the website has now a brand new design. We also created a few new sections ("new acquisitions", "new online videos", "16mm technical services", etc.) and also some new functions like automatic agenda (showing all the screenings that are organized with films from our collection) and the possibility to get subscribed to a RSS feed.

Light Cone is also planning to improve its web site further with the following functions which are under development:

- Creation of a « Programmer's space » that will soon allow you to prepare your own estimate while checking on film availability. In the future we will implement a secure payment system that will allow you to confirm your booking and effect payment. Finally, from this same space, you will have the possibility to browse your past and present invoices.

- In the « catalogue » section, the search engine will soon offer a thematic research capacity on works in distribution.

Rental fees

Rental fees, until now, were fixed at €20 per invoice issued. We now are adopting a more equitable scheme: rental fees will be constituted of 10% of the total amount of the invoice, with a minimum of €5 and a maximum of €50. This scheme is applied to all new invoices issued from January 1st, 2008.
