SUGARTOWN

by Nisi JACOBS

2001 / Beta SP / coul / sonore / 9 min

SUGARTOWN: New York City as seen through a glazed window. Two women do an awfully good job of allowing the bridges of their noses to dissolve into their straws, jutting from Tropicana O.J. containers. New York City, from my camera lens, this city becomes my sugar town, revelations of the fluid sweet rhythms, happening all around, everyday, everywhere, free for the tune-in. Nuances of the human voice, stomping feet, the 'cha cha' of a city dancer in his studio, and the ultimate inspiratrice, Sugartown, a French '70's pop song by the group, Les Miladys. A dub of the 45rpm, Sugartown, which I carried around in a red portable children's phonograph with side-panel speakers at the ages of 3 and 4 is available upon request. This is a slow-playing painting with sound and movement.
