THE DAY SLOWS DOWN AS IT PROGRESSES

«The Day Slows Down As It progresses» is a kaleidoskopic combinaison of painterly images from India about making pictures.

A woman squats in her doorway, carefully positioning dots of powder to make a colourful ornamental pattern. In a workshop in bombay men paint large-scale cinema hordings. A photographer takes passport photographs in front of Baroda court house, developing them directly in the wooden box camera.

The hand-crafted processes documented reflect the way the film is made as well. The original material, which Thomas BARTELS shot while on location as cameraman for Deborah PHILLIPS' film «Santoor», was later re-shot frame by frame on a rostrum camera andthereby altered by enlarging details, changing the tempoor assembling a moving collage using animation techniques.

The sounds were composed in a similar manner, albeit digitally by Wolgang in der Wiesche. Samples were used from atmospheric sounds, music from Hindi films and vocals, by the Berlin based musician Nandkishor Muley with additional musical fragments by in der Wiesche. It all then comes toghther in Dolby surround to utililize the magic of cinema projection optimally.
